What Are the Different Styles of Towable Campers?

Recreational vehicles (RVs) are a staple of the American road trip. In fact, 46 million Americans planned on taking an RV trip in 2020 and 11% planned on purchasing an RV. Whether piling in with family, friends or pets, having the comforts of home with you on the road makes creating memories hassle-free. But with all the choices available, how do you find the best one?

Recreational vehicle pricing, sizing and layout all play a major role in determining which travel trailer is right for you.

This post will help you find the perfect RV by going over 7 types of RVs, their living and storage space, need for towing capacity and other helpful features.

What Are the Different Types of Towable Campers?

Towable campers are RVs that need to be towed behind a vehicle to get from point A to point B. Travel trailers, toy haulers, and fifth wheels are types of towable campers that can meet the needs of your next trip.

When deciding which towable camper is right for you, you may ask: what are the different sizes of campers, and what are their floorplans like?

This guide will give you an overview of towable camper sizes and weights, storage capacity and common uses.

Types of Towable Campers

1. Classic Travel Trailer

Classic travel trailers are a great fit for taking the whole family on the road. Some models even have space for 8 sleepers! So what are the different sizes of travel trailers? Most classic travel trailers range from 18 to 42 feet long and can require between 3,500 and 14,000 lbs of towing capacity.

One of the key advantages of classic travel trailers is that they offer enough space to stand up in. They are designed to accommodate large furniture and kitchen equipment, so you can travel with all of the comforts of home. To maximize your space, some travel trailers include slide-outs that you can open up when parked.

Are you looking to travel in luxury with the whole family? Try this model to kickstart your search:

    • Interior Height: 6’9”
    • Awning Length: 16’0”

2. Micro Trailers

Micro trailers are the lightest models of travel trailers. They can be towed by most mid-size tow vehicles. These trailers typically range in size from 13’4” to 23’2” long and have starting weights between 1,585 and 4,695 lbs. Even with their smaller sizes, micro trailers still include many of the same luxuries as classic travel trailers.

For example, see how this model packs comfort into an easily towable trailer:

2022 Jay Feather Micro 199MBS

  • Sleeps up to 8 people
  • Exterior Length: 23’2”
  • Interior Height: 6’6”
  • Awning Length: 15’0”
  • Options for refrigerator, solar power and more!

3. Toy Haulers

Toy haulers have an added garage which gives them the ability to carry large cargo or have an additional room for guests. Whether your “toys” are kayaks or golf carts, toy haulers’ added storage space makes sure you have everything you need for your next trip. These models also feature folding ramps for easy loading and unloading.

Some models compromise living space for storage. Here’s one that doesn’t:

2022 Seismic Luxury Series 4113

  • Sleeps up to 10 people
  • Exterior Length: 45’7”
  • Interior Height: 8’3”
  • Garage Length: 12’6”
  • Options for solar power, king-sized mattress, outside tailgater camp kitchen and safety glass windows
  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating: 20,695 lbs

4. Fifth Wheels

When it comes to towable campers, fifth wheels offer the most in terms of size and luxury. They also require a special hitch that connects to the bed of a full-size truck to tow. Most models are between 29 and 45 feet long and weigh between 7,000 and 16,000 lbs unloaded.

If you have the towing capacity and want all the comforts of home on the road, then a fifth wheel might be right for you. See what they have to offer:

2022 Eagle Fifth Wheels - 355MBQS

  • Sleeps up to 11 people
  • Exterior Length: 42’0”
  • Interior Height: 8’7”
  • Awning Length: 21’0”
  • Options for king-sized mattress, booth dinette, refrigerator, solar power and more!

5. Stand-up Trailers

Stand-up trailers are another type of smaller camper. As the name suggests, they prioritize standing and sleeping space, unlike teardrop campers. Still, you have to choose between a full-sized bed, a bathroom or kitchen space.

6. Pop-up Trailers

Pop-up trailers have similar sizing to classic travel trailers. The main difference is in their fold-out sections (either covered by canvas or a hard shell) that provide extra sleeping space when parked. They provide shelter while still giving that “fresh-air” feeling of tent camping. But when it comes to creature comforts, pop-up trailers can be lacking. Most don’t come with a bathroom, and the need for set-up and tear-down can eat into your traveling time. When it comes down to it, pop-up trailers don’t have as much to offer as travel trailers.

7. Truck Camper

Finally, truck campers are the ultimate tradeoff between towability and space. They are installed in the bed of your truck and contain some of the comforts of home. Unfortunately, they really aren’t suited for more than 1 person, which makes it much harder to travel with family and friends.
